Social media is a great way to keep in contact with people, but it can also be a source of conflict during your divorce. Divorce is already a difficult and emotional time. It is also a time in which you need emotional stability and support. In fact, it’s easy to get carried away on social media and this can lead to acting impulsively or being unkind. This is not a good way to handle your divorce or maintain your stability.

A family law attorney can help you know further about how social media can be a problem for your divorce. Here’s a list of reasons why you should not use social media during your divorce.

  1. Your posts reveal your lifestyle

Facebook and Twitter can be used to show the world what your life is like. It is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family as well as maintain your relationships. However, it might also reveal a lifestyle that your spouse will not want to live with. Things like photos and status updates should be carefully monitored. It is also important not to post anything that can be used as evidence of your divorce or anything that would cause you to lose custody of your kids.

  1. Venting can harm your case

Venting on social media is a great way to get your feelings out. However, it can also lead to feeling hopeless or giving up. You may also leave the impression that you are the victim or looking for sympathy from others. Do not post anything that would harm your case or show signs of erratic behavior. Moreover, venting on social media will not give you an advantage during a divorce.

  1. Anything can be taken out of context

Things can be taken out of context when you are in a divorce. This is also true for social media messages. Your status updates and other messages can be misinterpreted or used against you in court. It is best not to post anything that would be misconstrued as evidence or used to put you in a bad light.

  1. It is a tool for manipulation

A lot of people use social media to manipulate others. Surprisingly, your spouse might be one of these people. In fact, your spouse might use it to talk about you negatively or even sabotage your case. He or she could also compel you to give up something that you need from them. Be careful not to post anything that might make the other side think they can win the case.
